Paleontology and geology

The earliest history of Wisconsin is recorded by ancient rocks of Precambrian age. Rocks over two billion years old represent the deposits of ancient seas, volcanoes, and underground bodies of magma. They do not contain fossils, and they form the basement on which strata of the Paleozoic Era were deposited.
